Super Wax was introduced in the 1970s by Dutch company Vlisco Holland. It all began with the iconic fabric number 1600. ´Super Wax Holland´ is famous for its duo-colouring and the unique bubbling effect on the print.

How It Is Made

The creation of Super Wax is similar to Wax Hollandais fabrics. Like Waxblock, a Super Wax Hollandais design is printed in liquid on cotton, starting with a base colour like indigo blue. The wax breaking effect during printing results in an overall bubbling pattern on the fabric, giving Super Wax its distinctive appearance. Each Super Wax undergoes 27 steps before it is ready to wear.
What sets Super Wax Hollandais apart is its double colouring, involving more colour blockings than regular Waxblock. Typically, a Super Wax features a base dye like indigo and three additional colours, creating vibrant and colourful designs. The third colour adds extra contrast without the bubbling effect.
This technique complements traditional batik and regular Wax Hollandais, giving Super Wax its unique style and status. Printed on both sides, Super Wax is made from 100% premium quality cotton and includes a special finish to prevent wrinkles. This finish ensures that the fabric returns to its original shape after sitting, though it may diminish after several washes. However, the cotton remains soft and smooth, resisting wrinkles.

Vlisco Super-wax designs

Vlisco Super Wax is especially popular in countries like Congo, with many classic designs still in production. Names like Village Molokai, Onion (also known as Matungulu), the ring or bague, and carré carré remain timeless. Super Wax designs are known for their bright colour combinations, featuring red, blue, yellow, and green, along with other colours like pink, orange, brown, and purple.
These colours are popular in Congo, Ivory Coast, Benin, and Togo, while Nigerians prefer softer shades. Super Wax caters to these varied preferences with a wide range of colour combinations, typically available in 6 yards, sometimes 4 and 2 yards, but rarely 12 yards. Each design features the brand's logo and indigo dye.
